Guyott says RTW law worst in a generation; laments negative impacts on working families
INDIANAPOLIS – Following today’s passage of the so-called “right to work” law, Indiana State AFL-CIO President Nancy Guyott issued the following statement:

“On behalf of all working men and women across Indiana, we are extremely disappointed that the Indiana General Assembly has passed the “right to work for less” bill today. They have set our state upon a path that will lead to lower wages for all working Hoosiers, less safety at work, and less dignity and security in old age or ill health. Indiana’s elected officials have given the wrong answer to the most important question of this generation.

I am reminded of the saying “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” and it seems especially fitting today. Hoosiers have been here before. From 1957 to 1965, Indiana experimented with this exact same law and after its utter failure to produce on any of its promises of economic salvation Hoosiers rose up, changed elected officials and repealed it.

It appears we are headed there again.

Sadly, the passage of this bill not only means that workers’ rights and ability to collectively bargain will be significantly weakened, it means that strong arm tactics, misinformation and big money have won at the Indiana Statehouse. Citizens who stood against this legislation were barred from entering the Statehouse, were denied the chance to testify before the committees considering it and were refused meetings with their own legislators. Independent, fact-based assessments of the economic impact on this legislation were dismissed in favor of stories, promises and unsubstantiated claims by out-of-state special interest groups. And Indiana’s legislative traditions were dishonored as those in power rammed through this bill at reckless speed to avoid further public scrutiny and to please their corporate paymasters.

However their victory will be as short lived, as this legislation is shortsighted. As working men and women did in the 1950s and 60s, this generation of Hoosiers will now rise up, join forces and repeal this anti-worker agenda again.

In 2006 Governor Daniels predicted a “civil war” if this legislation was brought forth – yet, on his way out of office, he launched this divisive attack anyway. But he was wrong; this is not a battle of brother against brother. It is a battle of Hoosier neighbors against corporate special interests from fields afar. And while it is not a war of our choosing, over the days ahead, citizen by citizen, block by block, community by community, legislative seat by legislative seat we will wage this “war” to take back our government from the special interests and restore the hard-earned rights of all Hoosier workers.”

The Indiana State AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations) is a federation of 800 local unions across the state belonging to 50 International Unions. In total, the Indiana State AFL-CIO represents more than 300,000 working Hoosiers.

February 1, 2012 (INDIANAPOLIS) — Comments from Indiana Chamber of Commerce President Kevin Brinegar on the passage of right-to-work legislation (House Bill 1001) by the Indiana Senate, which sends the bill to Gov. Daniels to be signed into law:

“With the passage of right-to-work, Indiana has further distinguished itself from neighboring states and given companies another big reason to bring their business and jobs here – and not there. This is the latest in a long line of actions to help make Indiana one of the most attractive climates for business relocations and expansions.

“Hoosier workers also will have the choice now of whether or not to join a union. People in Indiana and across the country recognize the critical importance of such a freedom of choice. Other state legislatures are seeing the value in trying to provide those choices and opportunities for individuals and companies.

“Congratulations to Indiana’s legislative leaders and Governor Daniels for once again positioning our state well ahead of the competition.”
Background:

A January 29-30 Rasmussen Reports national poll of 1,000 likely voters finds that 74% agree that workers should not be required to pay union dues (15% say the dues should be required and 11% are not sure). In addition, several states – including Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire and Maine – have indicated they will be refocusing their efforts to pass right-to-work as a result of the action in Indiana.

Right to Work Reality Check

As Governor Daniels prepares for his final State of the State address this evening, it’s time for a reality check on Indiana’s chief executive. In his TV ads pushing for the so called the “Right to Work” law, which are being paid for by secret donors that he refuses to name, and in speeches and interviews, the governor is continuing to peddle unsubstantiated claims and fuzzy math to try to make his point.

Study after study, including one that came out earlier this week from the University of Notre Dame, prove that this proposal lowers wages and living standards for working people, and actually has anet negative economic impact on the states that have passed it.

Regardless of what Governor Daniels says on TV or in tonight’s State of the State address about this legislation, here are the facts:
THE FACTS:

The truth is, hardworking Hoosier families need real solutions to the job crisis, not more of the same old politics. Gov. Daniels should put an end to his misleading, partisan attacks and instead bring people of both sides together to create quality jobs and put people back to work.

Preparation is Key to Safe Winter Travel in Indiana

Leigh DeNoon

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – It has been one of the mildest winters so far in decades, but you know what they say about Indiana weather: Wait a few minutes – it will change. Greg Seiter of the AAA Hoosier Motor Club says now is the time to make sure you and your vehicle are prepared to deal with cold, snow and ice.

Checking the battery and charging system is important, he says.

“You want to look at those battery terminals and cable ends, just to make sure that they’re free of corrosion. In addition, inspect your drive belts. Look at the underside of accessory drive belts for cracks or fraying.”

Seiter encourages Hoosiers not to be lax in preparing a winter survival kit for their vehicles.

“We would advise a bag of abrasive material – either sand, salt or kitty litter, or even traction mats – that you can use. A small snow shovel can come in handy. Also, a flashlight with extra batteries.”

Some water, non-perishable food and your cell phone and charger are other essentials for longer road trips this winter, Seiter adds.

Another important tip he offers is to pay attention to the weather forecast before leaving on a trip.

“Monitor the weather – also road conditions and construction. Even at this time of year, there can be construction delays. It’s important to be aware of those, too.”

GUYOTT: STATEHOUSE NO LONGER THE PEOPLE’S HOUSE
Administration moves to cut off citizens’ access to Indiana Statehouse

INDIANAPOLIS – In response to the Daniels’ administration announcement today that Hoosiers’ access would be limited to the Statehouse beginning Jan. 1, 2012, Indiana AFL-CIO President Nancy Guyott issued the following statement:
“For generations Hoosiers have been welcomed to the Indiana Statehouse where they could speak directly to their elected representatives about legislative matters that impact their daily lives. But with this decision by the Daniels’ administration, it is the people’s house no more.

Hiding behind the State Police and conveniently contrived capacity concerns, those in control of the Statehouse are using this “policy” to shut out the voices of dissent and limit access to government to only those they favor.  Under this policy neither lobbyist nor no donor will be turned away – yet every day, taxpaying citizens will be.

This arrogant move is clearly aimed at working people who in 2011 went to the Statehouse to protest the anti-worker agenda being advanced there – and it is wrong. Our Constitution guarantees us the right to petition our government, and this limits that fundamental right.

That it is the official policy of this state that the people’s voices are mere noise is tragic. And that those setting Indiana’s legislative priorities feel they must isolate people’s representatives from the citizens they represent is testament to how unpopular the policies they are advancing are.”

The Indiana State AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations) is a federation of 800 local unions across the state belonging to 50 International Unions. In total, the Indiana State AFL-CIO represents more than 300,000 working Hoosiers.

INDIANAPOLIS (Dec. 30, 2011) – The Indiana Economic Development Corporation announced today that in 2011 it secured job commitments from 219 companies from across the country and around the world, an increase from 200 companies in 2010 and more than any other year on record.

“With our low-cost, fiscally sound business climate, Indiana continues to catch the attention and win the investment of more and more companies,” said Dan Hasler, Secretary of Commerce and chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation.

Driven by companies like Angie’s List, Canadian National Railway, R3 Composites and SS&C Technologies, Indiana welcomed commitments for 19,080 new jobs and $2.7 billion in capital investment in 2011. The new jobs, many of which have already been created and others companies expect to create over the next five years, pay an average hourly wage of $21.22, above the state’s current hourly wage of $19.17.

“This year’s results are a testament to the dedication and collaboration of people throughout the state,” said Hasler. “But there’s more hard work ahead in 2012 as Indiana continues to make job creating efforts our top priority.”

Non-automotive manufacturing represented the largest sector for new job commitments in 2011 with 5,223 new jobs projected. With 4,650 job commitments, the automotive-related manufacturing industry represented the second largest sector of new growth followed by the logistics sector with nearly 2,000 projected new jobs. Job commitments for other sectors include: business services (1,729), information technology (1,261) and life sciences (838).

Business consolidations were a trend in 2011 with 34 companies planning to move all or a portion of their operations to Indiana. Collectively, these projects accounted for 3,325 new job commitments and $165.6 million in capital investment.

This year the state’s economy continued to garner national accolades. Area Development magazine noted in September that Indiana is the best state for business in the Midwest and fifth best in the country and Chief Executive magazine rated Indiana sixth in its annual “Best & Worst States” survey.Site Selection magazine ranked the state sixth in the nation for its business climate and Indiana is one of only nine states to have triple-A credit ratings from all three reporting agencies: Standard & Poor’s, Fitch and Moody’s.

About IEDC
Created by Governor Mitch Daniels in 2005 to replace the former Department of Commerce, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation is governed by a 12-member board chaired by Governor Daniels. Dan Hasler serves as the chief executive officer of the IEDC.

The IEDC oversees programs enacted by the General Assembly including tax credits, workforce training grants and public infrastructure assistance. All tax credits are performance-based. Therefore, companies must first invest in Indiana through job creation or capital investment before incentives are paid. A company who does not meet its full projections only receives a percentage of the incentives proportional to its actual investment. For more information about IEDC, visit www.iedc.in.gov.
